“The Team Has Always Told Me to Keep My Attacking Intent,” Says Abhishek

In recent years, Abhishek Sharma has become one of India’s most promising young cricket players. His participation in the Indian T20I team directly results from his steady play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

His brilliant 34-ball 79 against England in Kolkata, demonstrating his daring approach to the game, further cemented his stardom. Like many young athletes, his journey hasn’t been without its ups and downs.

A Rocky Start in International Cricket

So far, Abhishek’s experience playing international cricket has been uneventful. He has battled for consistency despite some strong innings; in eight of his first 12 T20I innings, he has not scored more than 20 runs. Join bet pro exchange for more latest sports news.

However, he is still a great addition to the squad because of his capacity to produce strong performances under duress. Abhishek, only 24 years old, is up against fierce competition from several gifted top-order batters fighting for a berth in the Indian team.

Support from Team Management

Abhishek's steadfast backing from his coaches and leaders makes him unique. This support has dramatically aided his ability to play his natural game.

Abhishek credited this assistance for his accomplishments during a news conference following his game-winning performance against England.

"I’ve always considered myself a team player,” he stated. “There will always be fierce rivalry in India for senior team selection spots.

However, it was a significant time for me when Gautam [Gambhir] Paaji and Suryakumar [Yadav, the T20I captain] told me always to keep my intent. I can accomplish that when the team requests it.”

Abhishek underlined the significance of the encouraging words he has heard from the team’s leadership. "If you don’t score any runs in three or four innings, it can play on your mind as a batter.

However, the way the captain and coach have handled every player, even when I haven’t performed well, they encourage us, ‘Go and express yourself; we know you’re going to win the game for us.’ When the coach or captain says this, you gain self-confidence and support.”

Gaining Knowledge from Legends

Interactions with some of the best cricket minds have influenced Abhishek’s growth as a player. While at Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), he collaborated with veterans like Yuvraj Singh, Brian Lara, and Daniel Vettori.

“I think I'm fortunate about this,” Abhishek said. "I first worked with Yuvi paaji [Yuvraj Singh]. Brian Lara was a tremendous assistance to me at SRH going ahead. Dan Vettori was straightforward; he only wanted everyone to express themselves.

That allowed me to play my shots freely. With Yuvraj Singh, Brian Lara, and even Gauti bhai [Gautam Gambhir] at the moment, it is clear that they only want me to support myself and show off my skills.”

In addition to improving his technical abilities, the guidance he has received has given him the self-assurance to make his shots without worrying about failing. This unafraid approach has characterized Abhishek's game.

Being Ready and Flexible

Abhishek’s success can be attributed in large part to his careful planning. He mimics match conditions during practice sessions before essential competitions and series.

Abhishek clarified, “I believe it only occurs during the camp, once you’re preparing for a tournament. I try to play against the type of bowlers I could encounter in a game.

Special thanks go to Abhishek Nayar bhai and Kotzy sir [Sitanshu Kotak]. Both assisted me in obtaining comparable bowlers in the nets.

When I go into a match or event, I hope to face bowlers who are similar to myself. For me, choosing a shot is easy. I observe the ball and respond.”

The Bowling Unit's Contribution

Even though Abhishek’s brilliant batting was the standout feature of India’s victory over England, he quickly recognised the bowlers' contributions.

India’s spinners put on a masterclass to limit England to 132 on an excellent batting surface in Kolkata. Abhishek praised Varun Chakravarthy specifically, referring to him as a “game changer.”

“If you look at Varun’s bowling in the last few series, I believe he has changed the game for us,” he stated. “You need one bowler who bowls well to get good wickets all around in the T20 format.

Other teams always have a hard time picking him up. Also, Axar [Patel] Bhai and Ravi Bishnoi are other spinners. Batters find it extremely challenging to play shots.”

Assistance from Past Players

Cricketing greats have also praised Abhishek for his performances. Following his game-winning hit against England, Yuvraj Singh praised the young batter on social media.
